Polish Giant Beefsteak: first 2 pounder of the season

Regrettably, I’ve not managed the time to take good care of the vines in my Giant Tomato Project this season.  Here’s my first 2 lb. tomato and it came from the open field, receiving minimal care:

Polish Giant Beefsteak (2.222 DT 2013):

Red flesh, clear skin (i.e. “Pink”), meaty, fairly firm flesh.  Intriguing, somewhat mild, but very good flavor.  Would make a great sandwich tomato!

At the moment, nothing else looks like it will come close to this one this year.  But there should still be 8-10 weeks left in the season…

CSA Contents for 8-14-2013

Regrettably, lettuce has fizzled out, but a Fall crop should be ready in 3-4 weeks.  Also, scaling back on the herbs and a few other items this week.  Tomatoes are coming on strong, so pull out that Italian cookbook!  Plenty of summer squash again also – consider freezing some for winter use.
